C. Keith & Co. actually evolved out of two things: Curtis' love of target shooting and his skill at customizing firearms. Tired of slow and unreliable workmanship elsewhere, Curtis started to work on his own target rifles and handguns, customizing them for tournament use. He then started doing work for friends; mounting scopes, fixing cracked stocks, reloading ammunition, etc. Word got out on the quality of his work and, before long, he was taking orders.
